We're not nearly done with Omar Tyler Moor here at Peak Stupidity. The last couple of weeks somewhat turned out to be Female Stupidity fortnight, with a special focus on Mrs. Moor. We can't do this 24/7 or we might lose our female reader...

... ship.

Nope, I wasn't shopping for a $47 MAGA hat but just having fun with this.

I've been fuming about this deal off an on for a year or more. Amazon.com no longer lets me buy stuff as a "guest". The account I'd had since the time all anyone wanted was an email, username (often one and the same) and simple password to deal with even your biggest sites like Amazon, was lost to me some years ago. I would go look through some yahoo emails for this info, but then yahoo locked me out of 20-30 year-long accounts.

Regular readers will know that this blogger likes to remain as private/anonymous as possible, especially to Big Biz. I'd learned a lesson about this in the middle 1990s, when it had nothing to do with the www.

I realized when creating a new account with these people that they really, really want a positive ID on you. They sent a code to an obscure email address I made just for this, but that wasn't good enough. I was supposed to stick in a phone number for "multi-factor identification". Not agonna' do it... no how, no way. I know, when I buy something they've got the CC info and the address to ship to, so they do know who I am. I'm just not going through this.

What exactly is wrong with letting me buy things as one of your guests, Amazon? You get the CC information, and I'll give you an email address, real or fake as you wish, so what's your problem with this?

My first thoughts were that to protect its reputation for reliability, in the payments sense, Amazon marketing and "tech" people figured they need this extra info to prevent too much of the Indian scamming (see post linked-to above), internal or external. From my inside information on the company from the turn of the century, I can tell you that the servers involved with payments were pretty darned secure even then - only certain people who needed to could go into the rooms or even floor of the building where these servers resided. I can also tell you that, for the possibility of internal hacking vs external, Indians could be involved now either way. Amazon's IT workforce was large majority White at the turn of the century. I highly doubt it is now. Is that a problem? I'm just sayin' asking out loud.

Yeah, but not only can't one buy anything without having a positively ID'd account*, one can't even look at more than the top few reviews. That was very surprising to find out. Why not?

Clicking on "See more reviews" or other related links gets me to here:

I also had wanted to see what the 1-star reviews had to say. I figured they wouldn't be about the material and workmanship of this particular hat, haha.

I've got an idea of what this is all about that has nothing to do with payment security and scammers. I'll speculate in a post tomorrow. (See, rather than having a paywall with an interesting question to be answered just beyond it, we get you hooked on reading here this way. Still there??)

Whatever Amazon.com's reason is for making it harder for me to buy things, it has definitely worked. A year ago there was a great deal on chainsaw chains**, as suggested to me by a friend. OK, Amazon, I tried. After that I went to the website of the manufacturer (or brand, whatever) and found these chains for the same good price. I'm happy this company got the extra money that they'd have forked out to you all. Too bad, so sad.

* I suppose one could get a burner phone to use with that non-identifiable email account and a gift card to buy stuff - it's still gotta arrive to a physical place. Will paranoia destroy ya'?

** They were so cheap that I don't know if it'll be worth it to have any of them sharpened when they get dulled by my screwing up and hitting the dirt. How long will they last? So far, so good.

PS: I just noticed the Minsky question was from you, Mr. Alarmist...

Lol... I probably could have (should have) guessed. I'm a little off my game today. I just got back from Norcross. (I'm not used to going to the city two days in a row anymore. I think the electromagnetic chaos fries my brain.)

One Minsky was a mathematician/computer scientist.
The other Minksy was a mathematician/economist.

I learned of the useless machine inventor Minsky when I saw the android MNKSY scene when I watched Fagro like a year back. (I'm thinking of hacking one of those useless boxes to be more like the one in the TV show. Colored lights, slower movements, a pause for a few seconds before it turns the switch off, a pointy finger hand. That sort of thing. But, like so many things, this customized version of the useless box remains in the daydream phase of production.)

So cheers to a wonderful evening, Mr. Alarmist! โ˜ฎ๏ธ

I get free shipping on orders over $35 (But I do have to wait a few days on delivery. Unless I'm mistaken, free shipping with Prime would usually get my orders here quicker. I don't live close enough to a warehouse to get any of that same day delivery they offer. But that's fine.)

I have Prime on two continents, and I get every pennyโ€™s worth of value out of it on both sides of the pond. Just got โ‚ฌ3 batteries with โ€œfreeโ€ shipping today. Mrs. Alarmist uses the free shipping to order things like toothpaste. I wonder how long before Mr. Lizardโ€™s-Hubby decides to start enforcing a minimum order size.

My graphic at the bottom of the page doesn't make much sense without the MNSKY movie. (MNSKY and the useless box are two sides of the same coin.)

Regarding the rest of your comment. Yes. Jeff Bezos was very smart to rely on their own payment processing and their own shipping services, etc. Amazon is very good about keeping the profits to themselves by not outsourcing other pieces of the transaction to third parties.

Cheers! โ˜ฎ๏ธ

PS: Adam, your link directly to amazon worked, while the other 2 had problems on this specific tablet. The description of the useless box read like it was written by a foreigner with not-so-great English writing skills. Weird.

It used to be that amazon had editors of their own. This was due to their having been a book seller to start, but, even after the brilliant (seriously) idea of Bezos' to have users fill up the site with "content", that is, useful reviews of books (then music CDs, video DVDs and VHS tapes, and software) for free, there were editors working there to write the front-page review or description. This kept on even after - in mid-1999 - Bezos made a big call, to sell EVERYTHING.

A little off this subject, but this was a big call, because, right before that, I figured the beauty of amazon's business model was that the 4 types of products they had at that time could, in the near future THEN, all be stored on computers rather than shelves and shipped over coax cables (Broadband was the term then). That could have eliminated much of the expense for physical things - the warehouses, called distribution centers, all shipping costs, and more.

Bezos went the other way. In hindsight, he was smart to go that way.

Anyway, amazon people still wrote descriptions of all the products after this big change, I'm wondering if those who sell on amazon now are told to write their own descriptions.

PS: Good morning, Adam. I just got finished with the Part 2 post.

Amazon, like a lot of other general things in this www and anti-social media world, does great because people value convenience over better ideas or principles. I too, would be lazy and avoid doing a 15 minute search for the chains elsewhere, though I have to say in this case that I KNOW my friend already HAD done this searching. He's that type.

It did feel good to get the chain directly from the company. I don't know how much their amazon fees are, but they're not negligible. (There's a big difference, of course, if the amazon site just does the sales or also actually warehouses and ships your products.)

We have screwed around with amazon too, wrt the amazon prime. At least 3 times, my wife signed up for the prime service so that we could buy a bunch of things that month and then cancelled it before the deadline.

Yes. Generally you can find the same item elsewhere, often for a better/lower price than amazon. As is the case with your chainsaw chains example, buying directly from the seller bypasses amazon and keeps Jeff Bezos' greedy little hands out of the seller's pockets.

PS: Good morning, Achmed!

I don't often buy things from amazon, but occasionally I do. Mostly because I can't find the thing I want anywhere else. (Like my astro low profile nano sockets and ratchets or those baofeng radios I like to collect, those ETMY 4G LTE POC radios I scored not too long ago, which I didn't need but have been having fun with anyway, and of course my useless box...)

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077C3JZQ6
https://preservetube.com/watch?v=zCyN3_kQ6qM

I didn't know they even had a "guest" option. The internet tells me that you can still buy an amazon gift card with cash (at a grocery store? or walmart? or something?) and redeem it at amazon through some sort of temporary account. (Whatever that means.)

In the future, you won't be able to log in to the internet without three forms of "government" approved ID and internet liability insurance. (Some recent state bills, such as Colorado's SB 26-051, have even floated the idea of requiring age verification directly at the operating system level. lol...)

Anyway... Not sure what else to say about that. So...

Happy Tuesday! โ˜ฎ๏ธ
