Northampton Mass, dubbed the Lesbian Capital of the World:

Instapundit linked me to a Boston Globe article today that prepared for us a veritable figuratively literal smorgasbord of stupidity. I mean, this one has got it all! Lesbianism, Wokeness, Genderbender transitioning, Kung Flu PanicFest residue... if I'm not careful this evening, I'm gonna max out our server space with commentary.

I happened to have read this story an hour or two before seeing that Steve Sailer wrote about it too here on his substack site. I do appreciate his take on the Geography of the story - his image is a maps of the area - yea! - and I also see that he approached it in his usual way, trying to notice sociological patterns**. Peak Stupidity is satisfied with just pointing out the stupidity and ranting "MAKE! IT! STOP!".

I'm not sure why the link I got goes to the web archive, a perfectly fine way to link to scrubbed pages*, but maybe it's that the folks at the Boston Globe got embarrassed after this extreme stupidity went viral, as it seems to have. See, the writer, one Annalisa Quinn is no small part of the stupidity herself. The story is A Western Mass. lesbian bar required KN-95 masks. When it changed the rules, all hell broke loose. The subheadline is Last Ditch Bar in Greenfield wanted to build community. They got a firestorm instead.

OK, first thing, it's 6 1/2 years now since the height of the Kung Flu Panic, and these people have not just been wearing face masks but have been requiring the wearing of face masks in their lesbian bar. They've not just been requiring some face masks but requiring N-95 masks. Wait, "N-95 or better"! What's better? To this day I regret that I was too lazy or late to buy one of those Medieval beak masks during that madness to wear at the grocery store and elsewhere. It would have been a blast!

Alas, what a lost opportunity... and I would have been welcomed at The Ditch in Greenfield, Mass... were I to learn how to make woke crazy talk and first transition to being a lesbian woman. Being a lesbian I'd have to learn to like girls, I suppose... wait. I mean lust is one thing, but I'd have to learn to like THESE girls, the ones at The Ditch.

Can you read that? Karaoke Night with face masks. Well, I never!

Greenfield, Mass, site of this lesbo bar, is 20 miles north of Northampton in the same Pioneer Valley in the Berkshire Mountains. Northampton is a haven for lesbians, as I learned long ago from some lesbians playing at a bar far away. They've got their own little world up in these towns with the "7 Sisters" women's colleges, the coffee shops... wait, here:
Quaint, crunchy Greenfield (population 17,700) isn’t a bad place for a COVID-cautious lesbian bar in 2026, all things considered. Rainbow flags deck store windows downtown. On a recent weekend, a community theater was advertising a workshop for masked performers, down the street from a bookstore with a “medical masks required” sign in the window. Men in ponytails and N-95s were ordering hibiscus tea from the coffee shop off the main square.
The men too?! I had thought the N-95 masks might have been some lesbian thing having to do with... well... what they do. I mean, things can go viral down there pretty quickly.

About the bar:
Three housemates in their mid-20s opened it together, hoping to fill the void left by two local queer bars that had shuttered. One of the trio, Asa Rosario, a drag performer who uses it/its pronouns, envisioned a venue where it and its friends could perform.

The three were intentional about the kind of values they wanted to bring to the divey basement bar, which they decorated with discoveries from Facebook Marketplace and pieces from local artists. No one would be turned away from the space for lack of funds. “Poor and unhoused people are welcome in the space.” The police were not.
The bar, sorry, the space - everything is "a space" to these people - is having some financial troubles. I'm not sure if the owners know why. I thought about excerpting this whole thing, but anyway:
Our mission is to create systems of care and action and aid,” says Jackie Matellian, one of the founders.

When it first opened, Last Ditch did fairly well. Customers fondly remember a raucous opening night with a (clothed) simulation of a lesbian sex act — masks in place — on the dance floor.

But over time, foot traffic to the bar slowed. More and more visitors said they didn’t have the cover fee; the bar let them in anyway. The owners fell behind on bills and couldn’t pay themselves or the people who worked there. So, after consulting with the Massachusetts LGBT Chamber of Commerce, they came up with a plan to bend one of their rules — and hopefully attract more customers.
How about the other one, about you don't have to pay and you can be a crazy bum? No, but it's the face-masking rule that was to be temporarily lifted for some sort of show. This attack by ableists on "disabled people, immunocompromised people" during the "ongoing pandemic" - NO, I'm NOT making this up, resulted in a 441 comment thread and then a zoom meeting.

It was the account of the zoom meeting that you're just gonna have to read yourself to understand the depths of stupidty here. (The Boston Globe writer is involved too, as she uses the retarded pronouns, confusing my reading of the story.) I'll give the reader a taste of what went on in that meeting.
There are some 10 people, seated in a circle on the dance floor, all wearing masks: Matellian, a handful of volunteers, some bar patrons, and two designated mediators who will facilitate conversations between parties who disagree. Another 10 or 15 people join the meeting via Zoom. The plan is to go clockwise, sharing views on the masking decision and the financial future of the bar. Each person has two minutes to speak. It begins with a calming breath exercise.
The online critics are unmoved. “[Y]ou chose to use your time to spill tears and center your feelings,” Noire posts in the chat. “This is incredibly racist and deflecting behavior.”
Miss "Noire" - a pen name because... I dunno, who would want to know her real name at this point anyway? - is b!ack, so she can say all that.
Eventually, after 3½ hours of discussion, the meeting wraps up. Noire has more to say, but when someone suggests he come to the next community meeting, he refuses. “There’s a lot of emotional and physical labor that goes into this, so for you as a white person that asks for me to stay for another meeting for free,” he says, is “incredibly disingenuous and racist. I’m not doing that."

“Then I think, unfortunately, this meeting has failed you,” replies a facilitator, “and I’m sorry.”
3 1/2 hours, and no make-up sex! I'm jumping back and forth here, but no matter:
When it comes time for one of the mediators, a licensed therapist, to speak, she takes a conciliatory tone.

“I love that you are here online,” she says. But “these platforms alienate us from each other. I’m talking about social media.” She asks whether participants can try to remove themselves from “places of righteousness.”

“I would love to get to a place where we all know each other’s face, where we all know each other’s name,” she continues.
Oooh, ooh [raises virtual hand on zoom], can I make a suggestion regarding the finances? I think you should ditch The Ditch... just the name, I mean. The homo men have got "Adam & Steve's". Would you all consider changing the name to, say, "Madam and Eve's? That might draw ... "Stop this macro-aggression in our space immediately and sit down, non-homo sane White man!" Errrr, I was only ... tryin'a help...
“It’s messed up that the mediator is dismissing those attending virtually. That’s not accessibility,” someone responds in the chat.

“A lot of people are calling for an acknowledgment of harm and I’m hearing a WHITE therapist ... center[ing] the feelings of a majority white and white adjacent staff,” writes Noire, who is Black.
Oh, yeah, I guess she is. Who'da known if our writer hadn't have reported that? It sounds like her black points got her more than her fair 2 minutes of hate comment, that is.
Moreover, the Zoom attendees speculate that the mediator’s licensed status makes her a mandated reporter — an agent of the state, akin to police. One person going by “Moss” asks if the mediator could have them hospitalized against their will, adding that her presence is “wildly unsafe.”
At this point, I gotta paste in what the tweeter in the Instapundit post, one Enguerrand VII de Coucy (thank you, copy/paste!), noted:
Everything starts making a bit more sense when you realize that there’s a sizable contingent of the political Left that functionally lives on an entirely different planet from the rest of us…
Heh. Indeed. Faster, please!

Back to the meeting, Jackie Matellian, who uses "she/they" and has tattoos, the obviously sanest, errr human in the crowd, is the only owner left after her two partners bailed.
“I never really wanted to do this,” Matellian says, beginning to cry under her mask. “I don’t think I’m doing a very good job.”
Matellian tells the group her credit score is trashed. For six months, she lived in her truck because she was pouring money into the bar. She is working four different jobs. She is responsible for paying off the $50,000 loan the three took out to launch the business.
The 3 1/2 hour meeting ends...
The in-person participants file up the metal stairs, past the native plant garden, and out to their cars. Little has been resolved. Last Ditch’s landlord wants $3,900 in back rent by Monday.
Back rent, you ain't gonna get the front rent... see, there's a PERFECT song that covers that, without the lesbian, racial, tranny, Kung Fluey drama - hit it, Lonesome George and your Delaware Destroyers, with One Maotai Bourbon, One Scotch, and One Beer....

[Peak Stupidity interrupts this post for a quick inflation note:]
A number of people on Instagram also said they were excited to visit the space unmasked. But this night, the hoped-for other patrons haven’t materialized, despite $10 cocktails and sternum-shivering dance tracks from DJ Harsh Noise Boyfriend.
Did they spell "due to" wrong? Seriously, $10 for a cocktail is a good deal? I'm hopelessly out of touch with the woke lesbo bar scene though...

Yes, it's like another planet. What was that bar called in Star Wars again? I think I'd feel more comfortable there. At least I could talk normally. The weirdos in the article SEEM to be speaking English, but everything they say is so FAR FAR from normal. About the bar owners again:
But by the time of Last Ditch’s monthly community meeting on September 11, only one of the original founders, Matellian, is still involved. The two others stepped back from the daily operation months before, Matellian says, citing various pressures and health issues. One had enrolled in clown school.
Enrolled in Clown School! Heh! Every one of the people in this story should be able to test out of the first 2 years! Prerequisites? We don't neeed no steeenking prerequisites, Xinor! Honk, honk!

* We've received lots of help from commenter Adam Smith before with the archive site when we've not been able to find scrubbed pages.

** Mr. Sailer wrote a great article for National Review long before they kicked him off contrasting lesbians and gay men. It's in his book.

PS: Good morning, Possumman. The one owner left. Jackie Matellian. looked OK in the one view I saw, from below, but she had too many tattoos. She took her N-95 mask off for the photo shoot. I haven't seen the other two. Yes, bags and masks. Paper, not plastic.

PS I saw pics of the owners--- brown paper bags would be more appropriate than N95 masks--perhaps two.

PS: Haha. (I still deeply regret that I didn't get that Medieval beak.)

"Yep, another trip to talk with the HR cat lady about the Feelz of the youngsters." You were the bane of her existence. They like that word. If you hadn't been doing real work, you would have been "let go".

PS

During the recent unpleasantness, one of my colleagues posted a selfie of her wearing her mask with a smile drawn on it, so I dug up one I had of me in helmet, visor, and oxygen mask and posted it with, “Mine works better!”

Yep, another trip to talk with the HR cat lady about the Feelz of the youngsters.
