Stupidity Updates (4).

General Stupidity  TV, aka Gov't Media  University  Cars  Economics  Artificial Stupidity

None of these items is worth writing a post about. However, I like to add any new information to whatever story I started, but any updates of old post would be a waste of time I think.

1) MOAR student housing!:

In University Bubble Housing we discussed a huge new housing complex, with (I just looked it up for more recent info) over 900 bedrooms. (The apartments average to 3 bedrooms.) Will the University Bubble pop, for various reasons? Will it be like a Bazooka Joe gum bubble popping or more like a big balloon?

I don't know, but some stupid (with a flare gun?)* has quickly been putting up another complex nearby. It's going to be roughly 1/3 of the size of the one described before, due to land area - I guess there's a limit of 5-6 stories - lots of these types of buildings are that high, and they look exactly the same. This one has a more aggressive timetable, and from what I've seen, they are sticking to it. Better sell out these apartments before POP!!

The mentality of the developer must be the same as that of the general housing bubble promoters of 20 years back. "The students keep coming." is the new "It always goes up."

2) Artificial auto stupidity:

While musing upon this housing "development", no double meaning originally intended, I was trying to get off the line at the stoplight. (No, not on a scooter this time . I kid - that wasn't me.) The car in front wouldn't move easily, but we've got our share of grannie drivers here. (Some are, in fact, 40 y/o men with pickup trucks.) Then it moved a few feet, but even getting off the gas was going to have me rear-end this vehicle. After another couple of seconds it moved some more... ahhh, it got going.

I refrained from using the horn - this is not Boston, and we are not ALL Massholes here. When I ended up next to the driver at the next stop light, I had my windows down and yelled, "hey, asshole!" heard his starter crank on, then crank again... as he was rolling! This was a problem with his fuel saving system of Artificial Stupidity called start/stop technology. This is not good.

We had our own potentially dangerous problem with our Korea-mobile, fixed via nice but of diagnosis by a good mechanic and a new crank position sensor. For this guy's sake, hopefully he can pull out just that one electronic module responsible and throw it in the fireplace. Yeah, I know... heavy metal fumes... yeah, but well worth it for the satisfaction gained.

3) The Idiot Plate wins:

We've told the story of trying to avoid the TV (called the "Idiot Plate" around these parts, with "tubes" no longer in use) in the auto parts store, in the doc's waiting room, at the gyms ... many such cases...

They are getting more wily, or I'm just getting more stupid, the people that set up the hotel gyms, that is. I've looked for the remote all over the place, but I can normally resort to the power plug. Of course, if there's someone else in there, I'll ask first if he's watching. Usually, nobody is, and usually nobody's in there.

The latter was the case. This thing was high up and tight against the wall, not too loud thankfully, but I wanted no part of it. I did find the remote control, but though an LED lit up to show it was allegedly sending signals, the TV would not turn off that way. I reached up, tried to get a hand in to get to the plug but, all that training at the gyms was to no avail. I was defeated by the idiot plate for the first time. Well played, TV installers, well played.

4) Ambulance Chasing:

No lawyering here... it was the ambulance chasing ME!

Peak Stupidity has ranted before on this subject, basically wondering out loud Are Senior Citizens DRIVING ambulances now?. That wasn't the first post either - see here and here.

I had this post update in my head as soon as I (FINALLY) saw the ambulance in my rear view mirror. Here I was following my friend who was riding a Vespa scooter**. I heard a siren. I assume others did, but nobody much seemed to care. I can't blame 'em now.

The ambulance was loud even at a quarter mile back or so. I was in the right lane of a 4-lane anyway, but I started to pull over. Nope, that wouldn't do. The 1st Responder wasn't close enough, and I'd be there forever near the side of the road blocking other traffic. I'd wait until he got closer. He didn't really. I had slowed down to below the (assumed) 40 mph speed limit on this wide-open city road, but well, I figured I'd switch it up, so I gunned it and drove 50 mph. At that speed, I left the ambulance in the dust and my scooter driving friend had nearly lost me!

I know they have rules, but they didn't used to drive like grannies. I hope the patient made it to the hospital alive. For me, knock on wood, I'd be OK with paying the 50 Large for a 5 minute ride on the Jet Ranger.

* These really old musical references are gonna be the death of this blog...

** No, weirdly that is not indicative of his being a drunk driver. This guy has a need to have every motorized thing there ever was on wheels, and yes, this includes ice cream trucks. (Work in progress.)

Yes. Sometimes I call it the University of Dahlonega. (Or the University of Dahlonega at Dahlonega.) The students call it UNG (You-En-Gee). Usually Mrs. Smith and I call it ung. (Like hung or rung.)

And yes. It is a very fancy crosswalk. There is a big metal (aluminum?) pole and lights and buttons on both sides. They even put a median in the road so the children really only have to cross half the street at a time. Even though I haven't seen anyone use it, and I haven't seen the lights work it looks very impressive. (Just not three hundred thousand dollar buck$ expensive.)

There's a story in this week's nugget about the new pool's new heater or something. (I didn't read it, just the headline. Looks like pretty big news.)

PS: I take it you mean the U. of North Georgia, Adam. That must be one HELL of a crosswalk. I bet his has lights, sounds, sensors, ... must be one really smart, smart crosswalk... I hope nobody dumb gets run over.

Man, I wish we had a water park when I was in college! The girls were extremely hot then. Instead, there was pool and still a few pinball machines. There's ALWAYS frisbee throwing.

So, I'm not endorsing this product (because I've never tried it and I really don't know how well it works) but simply sharing what I found after a 5 second internet search. If I had a car with autostart/stop I would try to disable it by removing fuses, relays and/or modules first. Obviously it is going to be a little different from car to car but I'm sure it is not only possible but not that difficult. For example...

The University of Dahlonega just installed a new $350,000 crosswalk so the college children can safely cross the street...

(I don't have the whole article handy, but I can get it for you guys if anyone is interested.)

But check out the Charlie Kirk article from this week's nugget...

https://files.catbox.moe/adap9b.pdf

100 cops to police a gathering of 500 Charlie Kirk fans.(?) Seems a little excessive. (Good thing the taxcattle have very deep pockets.) Apparently they baptized 12 people and a good time was had by all!

I only bring up the local Charlie Kirk news because all this canonization of Charlie Kirk seems odd and inorganic.

PS: About the student housing here, most definitely the most important of the 3 items here, I will add that the student gym is pretty new, and even Univ. staff aren't allowed in that one. I have hardly seen cash used at the outdoor cafes, etc. where students sit, mostly by themselves drinking fancy coffee and looking at their laptops.

Of course, cash is a thing for me, but my point here is that they have the Univ. card of some sort, so spending less thoughtful. These places are just flush with money. It's all based on the availability of student loan money for all.

I was kind of privileged to have my own (very small) room, but most dorms had 2 to a room, the walls were cinder block, etc. Everything was good enough but fairly low budget, as the money came partially from our State government, voted on by locals, and from the very reasonable tuition and dorm fees.

Your last sentence, Mr. Hail, has got me thinking that I left out that important factor in my previous U-bubble post. It doesn't have to be just parents realizing that the whole thing is a bad deal, but the Feral Gov. can cut the cord. It's not something I saw happening before Trump-47. (I did write that post just this past May, so I dropped the ball on this.)

PS: I've not written much about AI here, except in a sarcastic way, Alarmist. Sometimes I figure that it's as with digital electronics or computer networking*, in that I don't know enough to know how important this is. However, then I see AI results - I just don't see it as improving the world so awfully much.

How did these "inflation uplifts" work?

As for the girls, I think that's part of the bubble too, but I'll get into that in a post to come. (I didn't realize it until this morning, but I'd left out an important factor in the popping of the this bubble, not the chicks, but they could be part of it too.

Oh, I spent some time in Boston. They may very well have spread, especially with the big influx of Mass residents into southern New Hampshire to get away from all the .... problems that they keep creating.

* Way back in the early '80s some guy I knew told me that computer networking was going to be a big thing. This was back when most people had never touched a computer still. I didn't get the point of it...

PS: What I didn't mention, Alarmist, is that if were too blatant, with the cameras everywhere now, simply temporarily disabling a device like that when the young people know nothing about how anything works, could be considered "destruction of hotel property". I wanted to be pretty quick about it, and, well, you'd figure unplugging something is not destruction. (Yet, even using the remote control at the tire store caused a big fuss, because, as a computer, the TV didn't just start right back up.)

Anyway, I appreciate the advice about the connector (should the wires be connected together?) along with Mr. Smith's oft-proffered advice about "TV be gone" remote controls and such.

PS

There's something inherently disturbing about university facilities resembling higher-end hotels. Not a new trend. I'm not sure when exactly it dates from.

One thing that's disturbing, of course, is that none of the users can even-close to afford the facilities and services they're "consuming" at ages 18-22+. I refer only to the add-ons to the so-called "college experience," which actually form the core of it.

I wonder what a strenuous DOGE-like effort would do to a typical big-money college campus in the USA today.

PS

If you have old, unusable wired headphones, be sure to save the (3.55mm) plug, which you can donate to the offending device to essentially render it silent.

Yeah, find some way to disable auto-stop-start โ€ฆ itโ€™s an engine killer.

Uni student housing bubble probably has the same legs as the AI bubble. Iโ€™m long defense and utilities personally. Professionally, student housing made sense because until recently,at least in the UK, the leases had inflation uplifts. The problem now is that universities in the Western world are starting to retrench, especially as the female:male ratio is worsening.

Are Massholes just a Boston thing? I thought they ran up to the Canadian border.
