(Note: Title idea shamelessly stolen from a ZeroHedge commenter. Thanks, Lance Boyle!)

Tyler Durden over at "the Hedge" went a little over the edge with his Explosion Rocks Port Of Miami today. It's not the whole port and I don't know about any rocking. It sounds like an electric car exploded inside a (20 ft.) shipping container. (You would ship an ICE car without the fuel, right? I hope.)

These electric cars have been catching on fire a whole lot more than the Lyin' Press is willing to excitingly report. "If it bleeds, it leads.", I thought, but not if the story goes against THE NARRATIVE. For EV's, it's more like "If it burns, nobody learns." It's different. Electricity is good, because, no CO2... I mean except back at the natural gas or coal-powered plant that generated what these cars use.* No, let's not talk about this stuff, such as these thankfully empty and parked electric buses in China:

NBC's Jane Pauley and Stone Phillips were nowhere to be found this time. They didn't NEED to be there.

There have been 10's of thousands of EV's burned and destroyed by battery thermal runaway. You try to do everything right too, you know?: I bought this car to help save the planet. I had my house built 10 ft up on stilts for the coming Global Boiling sea- (plasma-?) level rise, and, well, yeah, otherwise I couldn't insure it. When the Governor said "evacuate", I evacuated, first my bowels for the long road trip and then up the road, using my gas car, cause, range and stuff... Then, I find out that seawater set my electric car that was parked under my house on fire, and it burned down the house! Insurance company says they don't cover that because it was an act of God... dang Global Boiling... not covered.

Look, I appreciate the mechanical simplicity of an electric vehicle. I mean, without much to the drive train and with no injectors to get clogged, no coils and plugs to fail and foul, no valve train to wear out or be adjusted, no coolant to leak, what a relief that could be! There's much more to the electrical system, of course, and those batteries fail sooner than the systems mentioned above (usually!). I don't have anything against them or anyone who drives them...

... so long as the sales are within a free market, without the constant Government pressure and incentives that distort the market we have now. There's a big incentive to say good things about EVs and ignore the bad things. Remember those 5-Year Plans and New Deals (wrapped in golden chains**) in the old USSR and China? Yeah, we have them in California now, and they don't work any better. The goals may not be met without melting down a few 10's of thousands of EV's, not to show steel production goals this time, but well, those Lithium Ion batteries can get out of control.

The reason airlines want the Lithium Ion batteries in the cabin and not in the luggage in the holds is that they want someone to be able to get at these in flight. Fires that start in them are not as easily suppressed, especially by suffocation, as are normal combustion reactions. If you remember that fire triangle from the Boy Scouts, ignition/heat, air (oxygen to be accurate), and fuel all must be present to sustain combustion. When certain parts get hot enough these batteries create their own oxygen along with the ever-present ignition source and fuel. (Some chemical/thermo. details are this technical paper from China. I mean, they oughta know.) Not only that, but some reactions going on release the Oxygen from water sprayed on to smother it (which doesn't exactly work) and cool it.

Progress in battery technology has been amazing. (I think a battery-powered chainsaw would have been a joke 30 years ago.) Even so, these Lithium Ion ones have only about 2% the energy density of gasoline. That's still a lot of energy for our electronics. To enable a range for a vehicle that resembles that of a gasoline powered one, these batteries/battery packs must be big. Though there's a correction factor for efficiency (electric motor over the IC engine), if an EV has 1/2 the range, that battery pack must at least around 3-4 gallons of fuel's worth of energy, 350-400 MegaJoules. That'll create a lot of havoc.

The engineers will figure it out. In the meantime, there are the ZeroHedge commenters, with one MagicHandPuppet stealing my thunder:
Saving the planet from global boiling, one battery car explosion at a time.
Then, there are the cynical types. Look, I'm as cynical about the Potomac Regime, Deep State, Globalist elites, et al, as the next guy. In general ZeroHedge commenters are slightly less cynical than those on The Unz Review. What I don't like is the "America did it!" stupidity as the explanation for everything. We've noted that Stupidity doesn't stop at the California coastline and, as for evil, I think America itself - meaning, the people - has a lower evil density than much of the rest of the world. Commenter Gargolic wrote:
China is liable to be sabotaged so as to put people off their ultra cheap EV's. This could be a test run.
That's very Unz-like. Dude, ever run into Cheap China-made Crap in your daily life? Extrapolate, man. Then too, wouldn't enacting tariffs be a little less risky? On the lighter side, I couldn't help inserting the following from commenter JUST THE FACTS:
My uncle was injured in an explosion at the cheese factory today.

He was hit by a chunk of da Brie.
Anyway, I hope those big container ships and the auto carriers pay hazard overrides and have good insurance. Imagine a ship with 5,000 EVs lighting up out on the high seas... or even a few containers filled with Chinese electronics. "Hey, it's been 2 months! Where's my stuff?!"

* I do get the point that the pollution, ACTUAL pollution, I mean, is better created at the point source. It's outside of town, higher up out of the stack, and all that. However, that idea and the scrubbers are for actual pollutants, not for 1 of the 2 products of clean combustion, CO2 (H2O, water, in vapor form, being the other).

PS: Good morning, Achmed,

Yeah, it would be nice to pick your container. Some of the colors they come in a pretty horrible and repainting a whole container sounds a bit like work.

One time at the port they gave me a brand new empty shipping container to deliver. It was a 20 foot MSC container like the one pictured above. Most the containers are a little beat up around the edges, and the inside can range from not too bad to absolutely fucked. What I noticed most about the Brand New container was how nice the floor was. They are (or were. This was 20 years ago so things may have changed.) made from some very nice hardwood. If someone took just a little time to lightly sand and seal the new floor of that container it could have been absolutely beautiful. Better than most new hardwood floors.

On the other end of the container quality spectrum was the company that would ship old broken engines, transmissions, and differentials off to China for recycling. These loads were also shipped in 20ft MSC containers. (They were very heavy loads. There is no way they could have shipped these loads in the 40' containers due to weight restrictions.) I hope they used old beat up containers for these because I'm sure these containers were utterly destroyed by the cargo. The cocktail of used motor oils and coolants that would sometimes dribble out of the bottom of these containers as I trucked on down the road was horrible. There is no way you would want one of these containers for whatever it is you are using it for. (Unless you're looking to stack up old broken engines, transmissions and differentials, that is.)

Surely there must be a company out there that will let you pick your container, or at least the color. The container guy from those videos I posted looks like he would work with you to help make sure you got what you were looking for...

https://www.youtube.com/@TheContainerGuyTV

Unfortunately, he is in British Columbia. Maybe there is a guy like this near you.(?)

Anyway. I'm off to work. I hope you have a great day, Achmed!
(And good luck finding a good container in a good color.)

Cheers! ☮️

PS: Thank you for the links, Adam. I have learned a good bit already, but I'm sure this info will help.

One thing about the 1-use containers. It's likely not the only outfit, but one place I called was a real shit-show, customer service, errr "care" wise. I mean, the phone tree had me trying things for 10 minutes (probably 5 calls) to finally get a live person. She had an accent from somewhere... not the nearest port.

Not only did she say she was in Miami, nowhere near me, but she actually was in the Philippines, as I dug out, the outfit was OUT OF Miami, with containers all over. The problem was, I wanted to ask certain questions that almost certainly no woman in the Philippines could answer, and almost no woman.at all. My questions were about unloading, support for the container, possible hauling off of the container later to somewhere else. I say "almost no woman" because almost all of these truck drivers are men.

The more-local outfit had a friendly lady who answered right away and gave me the number to a delivery driver for my questions. (He didn't call back - another story, but I wasn't persistent, as I want to look around some more.) However, these containers are 10 y/o or so. They insist they're in good shape, but then you don't get to pick your own. Picking a color may sound unnecessary, but I want a red/rust-COLORED one that can blend in, or at least dark green. She explained why you couldn't pick the container.

Story still developing...

Reminds of this one time I got to the port. As I was driving through the yard looking for my container I came across this huge pile of damaged, twisted, smashed up containers. Must of been a few hundred of 'em, all in a big smashed up pile. (It was the only time I saw some many seriously damaged containers all in one place.) I don't know what was inside of them, but I'd imagine some of the people expecting their orders to be safely delivered were pretty disappointed and even pissed off.

Some of those container buildings are pretty nice. I don't know what you're planning on using your container for, but you might like to spend a little more on what they call a one-trip container. Some of those are like new.

PS: Yowser, that is a lot of containers, Adam! Right across the highway from EWR, not the best neighborhood, where the ghetto only ends inside the Sky Club lounge. '-}

I've been looking into getting a container delivered. It's the dropping off - whether on just railroad ties or some concrete w/ railroad ties - that seems the tricky part, without the nice specifically- designed cranes that they've got at the port. (I know your wrote in here before about some of your truck driving work, including at the port.) I want to know how the thing could be taken out nicely if/when the time comes.

I've seen them piled 8 high or so at a port over 20 years ago with a sign advertising them for sale. Goods come here, but mostly only bulk stuff comes back - kind of like as with a colony. So the containers accumulate, which IS good for someone who wants the storage*. I called the number on that sign, and they were $1,200 or $1,600 then. Now it'd be about 50%, maybe even 100% more, but condition matters too.

Oh, yeah, I've seen a big yards of the new cars rolled off one of those ships at a port. These were from Japan.

* BTW, I slept in a fixed-up one for a night about 2 years ago. Not bad - a little cramped. The 2x4s and sheetrock(?) only add 4" on each side, but that makes a significant difference on the shorter dimension of the floor plan.

PS: Greetings, Achmed,

Sorry to hear about your Lamborghini. Tis a shame such a fine automobile is sitting at the bottom of the sea. Sad really.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure most(?) of those cars aboard the Felicity Ace were not EVs. But some of them were. And there are reasons they tell people not to park their EV in the garage or within 100 feet of a structure or other flammable things. I know I do my best to avoid parking next to them. (Which is pretty easy because I don't go many places.)

When I used to pull containers in and out of the ports there were giant parking lot areas where they would store the cars after they were unloaded (or waiting to be loaded) from the ships. (Thousands of cars all with those white plastic wrap like coverings to keep them from being sun damaged with little solar panels in the windows so the batteries wouldn't go dead.) I'm pretty sure they keep some small amount of gas in them. I don't know if that's a 1/4 tank or maybe like 2 or 3 gallons or whatever. But I know they don't ship 'em empty.

Here's a google maps link to one of those lots...
https://tinyurl.com/4nac7uxx

Zoom out a little and scroll around and you can get an idea of how many cars are around there. You can tell the difference between the car lots and the container yards. It's really a very large place in person. Even a full size tractor trailer is quite small next to the ships and the container piles.

Here's a tractor with an empty chassis looking for his container...
(You know. For a little perspective.)

The Azores and the Canaries aren't that far away from each other and they're pretty easy to mix up. (I call no foul.)

So yeah. I've got to get going for now. Mrs. Smith and I are headed to town. We need milk and a few other things.

Later! ☮️

PS: So THAT'S what happened to my Lamborghini, Adam! (Never got my replacement - couldn't get through the phone tree. Press Uno por Italiano or some such thing...)

Thanks for that story - very interesting. When I wrote in the post about IC cars without gas, I was thinking more of cars shipped in containers - I imagine usual special one-off imports or long-distance moves. I would think one would be required to ship it without fuel. With the ro-ro vehicle carriers, they've got to have the fuel on, or it'd be a real PITA to load/unload.

Anyway, ways of dealing with gasoline are well-known but not with the Li-ion batteries. I suppose just one EV could set off a whole lot of either kind.

I had to go look at the globe just now because I always confuse the Azores with the Canary Islands in my head. That route from the Baltic Sea to Rhode Island seemed a little off a straight path, but that was probably due to currents and iceberg avoidance.

What a shame. I know about a train derailment that destroyed some dozens or a hundred BMWs a few years back. That was nothing. Almost 4,000 high-end vehicles - yep, can add up to $400 million or whatever one of the suits against VW, maker of the Porsche was. It's going to be hard job for the arson investigator, what with the ship under 10,000 ft of water. (Now, if there were gold onboard, that spark some interest.)

Volkswagen AG faces a pair of lawsuits in Germany over claims it was a battery in a Porsche electric vehicle that triggered the 2022 fire onboard a massive cargo ship that eventually sank with thousands of cars on board.

• Porsche lost 1,117 cars on the ship
• Audi claimed a loss of 1,944 vehicles
• Volkswagen lost 561
• Bentley lost 189
• Lamborghini lost 85 cars (including fifteen high performance Lamborghini Aventador LP 780-4 Ultimae vehicles, with an estimated retail price above US$500,000 each.)

An estimated cargo worth over $400 million.

(In other news...) I've heard that (some?) tow truck companies are refusing to put EVs on their flatbeds after a crash because EVs can burst into flames going down the road. And no towing company wants a fire on top of their flatbed. (And who can blame them?)
