Before commenter Alarmist chimed in, the original title was Get woke, blow a tranny, go broke. Anyway that wasn't what you might have thought. Our post titles can sometimes be misleading.
My wife wanted us to take a trip to Disney Land, World, whatever, about 8 years ago. Our boy was the right age, so you just gotta go, right, as an American? No. I was adamant. "Screw that. You two can go. I'm staying home!" At that point, Disney's woke stupidity was not something I was completely aware of, so it wasn't that.
I'd been a few times, all on free tickets from work and that. You stand around most of the day in lines. The junk food costs a lot. After decades of inflation, even 8 years ago, I could not make any kind of estimate from when I'd been there, so I just figured, without transportation, for 2 days we were talking something approaching 1,000 bucks.
Why, then? If you really like rides that would make me puke my guts out now, there's a place 100 miles down the road that has steep hairy rides galore. (In our teenage years, my brother and I found a way to get off the roller-coaster a different way and went on it 27 times in a row. You pay by the day. Getcher' money's worth!!)
Our family trip to Disney didn't happen. My wife got wise to the woke world around her by the years '17 to '20 (the PanicFest really did a number on her).
Lately, we've been acquainted with a Christian family with 3 girls, for whom my wife helped find a rental house.. My friend is the landlord - that helped - and he is also a, and now THEIR - car mechanic... it's a van actually.
I was really surprised when, in this day and age of blatantly anti-White, anti-Christian Woke Disney, this Dad told my friend that the family was heading to Disney World (Land! Whatever!) Oh, and just before that, he'd arranged a $100/month reduction in rent for the 2nd year because decent people are hard to keep, the only reason too.
Hey, it's his money, and it's officially part of the American Bread & Circuses. I wouldn't have brought up this stupidity even if I'd run into him - it's not quite my business. Still! WTH, man? Why would you, on an obviously tight budget, put out a couple of thousand to support those who hate your kind? Plus, the steep, hairy roller coasters are right down the road!
Going back a bit, my friend did what he could to the family's Honda van's transmission a year or so ago, getting it to shift better, but he'd told the guy that these were a bad bunch of trannies (on the car, not at the theme park), and it'd probably been failing already when the man bought it used as a "good deal". He was driving on borrowed time.
Well, there ya' go! The family could get away with driving literally (which I literally mean) 10-20 miles a week, because they are very close to work and school*. But their trip to visit Woke Mouse Land was a whole lot longer than that - a year or two's worth of very easygoing driving. They got woke, blew the tranny, and are now (kinda) broke. A new tranny will be about $3,500. (The van is in otherwise decent shape, to that's the plan.)
Those slogans Conservatives use - take them seriously, people.
PS: It's not just this guy... well, obviously, or the place might be broke itself. I've run into families on airline flights - Conservative from the looks of them and any remarks out of them - yet, they just gotta participate in the Bread & Circuses... Oh, but they voted, so, it's all good ...
* Hence, the rental of my friend's place specifically.

PS: Sorry for the late reply, Rex. The place with the great rides is not 100 miles from Disney Land or World. It's 100 miles (well, a little less) from us, yet the Disney park is much farther away.

PS
Mr. Anon, you may not understand adult Disneyland lovers, but they definitely exist. When my (now ex-)wife and I were in our forties, her standard Christmas present from me was an annual pass. And my 49-year-old stepdaughter plans to have her boyfriend take her there this November.
Achmed, which park are you talking about that's 100 miles from Disneyland and has steep, hairy rides? Magic Mountain is closer than that, Knott's is MUCH closer, and I can't think of any other candidates.

PS: Ooops, never mind the rack (maybe a worm gear though?). Friend said he'd never worked on these doors but the inside - motor and cables - shouldn't be too big a deal.

PS: I thought about asking my mechanic friend about those van doors, Adam, but then I remembered he doesn't do body work. I suppose he may have fixed one of these mechanisms before, either the rollers and tracks or the stuff inside the door - the motor and some worm gear/rack or whatever.
I'll ask him tomorrow.

Mr. Anon, for my parents it would have been a matter of money, even in "the day"s prices. I don't think we would have cared much anyway. It's hairy rides that we were after. There are plenty of better places for that, or WERE, at least.
Oh, so you've been on the Wolverine Ride, I see. That sounds like an E-ticket one!

Indeed. Other than the lame(ish) transmission thing, Honda Odysseys are fine cars. They're practical, reliable, pretty good on gas, and as nice as a Honda should be.
(You know Hondas. Change the oil, brakes, tires, windshield wipers, etc. as needed and don't forget to do the timing belt & water pump every ~75k. Also, CV axles. But that's about it.)
(Though I do wonder how on god's green earf one goes about fixing those motorized sliding doors when they break. I've never had to deal with such a thing, but I do imagine they break from time to time just like anything else. And as I've never really looked into how that mechanism works, I guess I'm trying to say, it is still a mystery to me. Now, on an other hand, go ahead and ask me how one fixes a broken sunroof. That is something I do know how to fix. No longer a mystery.)

My parents took me to Disneyland once when I was ten or eleven. I guess I liked it. I have no particular memories from it.
I'm sure they didn't especially enjoy it. They would have preferred to see some historical sites - an old fort or mission or mansion from old California.
I don't understand people who go to Disneyland/world as an adult. I would sooner have a cage with a live wolverine in it strapped to my head.

PS: Well, I'll have to add that the mechanic has no problem with the rest of said vehicle. (It's not too high on milage, IIRC, the low 100,000s, a "barely pre-owned" car today, haha.).
Here's something interesting I didn't know about until I saw, and that is, that the BMW plant right off of Greenville-Spartanburg airport ships some of their product overseas, as in to Germany, I would imagine! You are indeed a purist.
Interesting about the 4wd mini-vans. Back to being a purist, there's a guy in town with this very small Japanese van that he shipped from Japan, with its RH steering and all! He loved it. We talked to him a few years ago, then my kid and I saw it at an intersection a few months back.

I mean the whole vehicle. (First gen Honda Odysseys were made in Sayama Japan.)(Sencond gen odysseys were made in Lincoln Alabama and Alliston Ontario. All the newer Odysseys that were sold in North America were made in Lincoln Alabama.)
(Also somewhat interesting, to me anyway, some of the first gen Odysseys were available with 4wd, but they were never sold in North America.)
Wildly, (and much like German cars) they used to make Japanese cars in Japan.
I don't want a Mercedes that was made in Tuscaloosa any more than I want a BMW that was made in Spartanburg. And I'm really not interested in any Japanese car that wasn't made in Japan.
I guess I'm a ๏ผs๏ผsnob๏ผ/s๏ผ purist (or something?).

PS: This guy SHOULD be paying attention, Alarmist. He's a Christian with his kids at a Christian school. Don't they keep up with anything there?
I do remember that thing after the Superbowl. I can't remember it the 1st one was just a line a guy said, and that Disney went with it. Or, did they set the whole thing up as a different kind of ad?
I can remember when re-runs of "The Mickey Mouse Club" were on TV even. That was a different time, you understand ... a MUCH different time.
If you want to lay it out here, I don't mind at all, Mr. Blanc. I hope the fate of the devil mouse lies with a big cat of some kind. Cats are not kind to mice at all. I wanna see that.

When you say 1st generation only ones made in Japan, do you mean the whole vehicle or the transmission?

PS In 1973 I was visiting my grandparents in Sarasota. By chance, my father, step-mother, and two youngest half-brothers (then 8 and 10) were visiting as well. They were going to return to Michigan via Orlando, to visit Disney World. They asked if I wanted to join them. A chance for a little bonding with the sibs would have been a good thing, but otherwise I had no interest in Disney. I took a pass. I donโt want to endanger your site, so I wonโt say what I think should be done to the Disney cesspits of degeneracy.

PS: Greetings, Achmed!
Generally speaking, the only Honda Odysseys worth buying are the first generation*. All subsequent Odysseys have the shit transmission problem. The first gen (1994-1998) were the only ones made in Japan.
* There was some sort of quality control issue in 1995. Don't buy a 1995 Honda Odyssey. They too have shit transmissions.
