Instapundit posted the following by an X-er named Tim Murtaugh. Mr. Murtauge says:
I guess that non-partisan watchdog group wasn't available for comment this time.
Let's also note that, contrary to what his press spokesragdoll said, Bai Dien had the IRS cracking down with a new "Service Industry Reporting Program. I wonder if the IRS has got their 87,000 new employees on line yet.
As Peak Stupidity commented when Trump proposed this move a couple of months ago, taking action on this is really a function of Congress. That should be especially obvious in light of the Chevron v Natural Resources Defense Council ruling. I'd like to see it happen, one way or another, but I think the IRS won't remove its grubby hands from this income, or else, what's next, teenage boys who mow lawns?! For those not wanting to be under the jurisdiction of the IRS, there's cash.

PS: It can't have been for the roads though, Adam. They are as torn up on average as I've ever seen in my life (in this locale). That's the old stand-by from collectivists: Don't you want good roads?
BTW, that MMT is something I only read about within the last 5-7 years in comments on The Unz Review. In fact, I think that was the guy's handle, MMT, or Modern Monetary Theory. It sounds like pure BS. If an old friend invites me to dinner and mentions there'll be someone there giving a talk on Modern Monetary Theory, I think I'll just pass...

PS: "Seriously. They started moving Tax Day around to accommodate the D.C. Emancipation Day holiday." Is that it? I remember something about an extended deadline in '20, maybe '21 too, due to the dreaded Kung Flu. We were stuck inside with cops shooting paintballs at us on the porch, so we couldn't do taxes, cause... something.
Anyway, I figured the whole thing was getting slack like everything else, so this past April I missed the old 15th deadline. Someone told me that was still the deadline, but, what, me worry?

One wonders if there was a federal agent who happened to be a customer of that Wendy's and that's why he ended up in federal court.
Yes I know it's a stretch.
As far as not having to pay taxes, MMT is something dreamed up by socialists as a way to trick people into thinking that government budgets are not necessary. You pay taxes to the government so the government can pay for things. Deficit spending depends on the people buying their promises thinking that they will be repaid.
We've seen what happens when people start thinking otherwise: Zimbabwe, Argentina, etc. Namely, people start not buying your promises. You can run the presses (and some governments have), but without bonds to back them, the currency very quickly ends up being worth less than the paper to print it on.
Unfortunately the guns backing up the "taxes or else" thing means that even if you start thinking you're not going to be repaid, at most you end up with a bill that says they're going to pay higher interest. As long as they pay their soldiers and police at least.

PS: Haha, Mr. Blanc, I had that very thought, but I didn't have another example in mind.
I won't say what the work was, but long ago as an adult I made probably only $1,500 in one summer - part of my hobby though. Then, after New Years, the girl who most wanted to get the place a tiny bit organized called me to ask my address, to, you know, get things straight with finances and taxes, etc.
"Are you kidding me? After that measly pay, you want me to do a 1099? Nope, you ain't getting my address. I'll see ya' there next week." She was nice and pretty much understood.

PS: Mr. Hail, to address your comments (here, now):
One of the 5 major (I was just getting started [/Al Pacino]) evils of the Federal Income Tax that I laid out in order in this post:
https://www.peakstupidity.com/index.php?post=1415
Peak Constitutional Amendment - XVI, Part 3
was the Social Programming aspect of it.
The income tax has long been used to incentivize people to do things this way or that way. I would say a big one is the exemption for churches. They supposedly can't become political in order to keep this, but that's long gone by the wayside - first with the Black! churches.
I suppose here, it incentivizes people to offload wages to try to call various "prices" for service as tips, as you explain. Does it encourage a more 3rd-Worldly economy? I've described some of this already somewhere - you get slipped some extras by the waitress and you give a bigger tip. The restauranteur loses, which indeed is not 1st-Worldly behavior. It is basically corruption at a small scale.
So, I agree about the moral hazard and that people WILL find a way to avoid forking up money to governments. Your example is a good one, and we can't all be financial wizards like Alarmist. (We should try though... every April 15th)
That is the same as with reimbursement, per diem, etc. We all try, even the big companies giving per diem, to keep the IRS's grubby hands off the payrole.
I also agree that this is just use of the complicated income tax system by politicians, the 2 of them, to get votes from the big contingent of lower working class service works. As per Mr. Smith's ap-news article (his most recent post), I don't think the government itself will go for it. It is, after all a function of Congress, determining these tax laws, so it doesn't matter what Kamelion or Trump say about it.

There is all kinds of moral-hazard potential (if that's the expression I want) with Tipping itself, even when taxed. But if you remove taxes, it turbocharges the moral hazard.
You know that huge numbers would try to dodge taxes by reclassifying salaries/wages as "tips," to any extent possible. Since the got needs x-billion in funds, the loss to the new rise in "tips" would be increased on the suckers out there still earning "wages."
Then, if the IRS specifies it only applies to x, y, z categories, it's explicit favoritism to a specific constituency, or demagoguery at its mass-democratic worst, i.e., a pitch for a wealth-transfer to buy votes. Vote for me and I'll redirect net public-monies to your benefit.

PS: That question posed, or answer given, by Santiago Capital is interesting, Adam. Is he saying that if we didn't have taxes to pay in US dollars, we'd find other ways/currencies to settle accounts with? I think people accept the US dollar, because that's all they've ever known. I remember, maybe 25 years ago, when I attributed something special to those green pieces of paper - I'd never put much thought into why or how they were somehow MONEY and just HAD to be.

PS: Great comment, Adam Smith. I'm glad you brought up that chapter in Romans. Was it written by Paul, formerly Saul, or did Constantine - the first emperor to consider Rome a Christian society/empire - or the emperor, inserted for the reasons you attribute? Lots of the Bible is contradictory in the letter, but maybe not in spirit, depending on the interpreter - preacher or believer.
That sure was a good way to get Roman Christians to "get on board" with the empire. It's a good cop out for those who don't want to pay attention to this world, but only the next. Just pay your 10%. Except it's NOT 10%, not even close when you count it all!
The Kung Flu PanicFest was a good test of the spirit of the churches. I've seen videos of a few that resisted, including one big church in California, but most failed that test miserably. Does "gathered in his name" include zoom? (I really don't know, but I don't like it.)

It is pretty interesting to me that they nailed the dumpster fire kid so hard while letting the others off with such lightly slapped wrists. Even assuming the dumpster and the trash inside of it are a total loss, there were no other damages. Well, a little loss of revenue while the restaurant was temporarily closed because of the fire trucks in the parking lot. But no damage to any cars or buildings, etc.
(So much for equal protection under the law or proportionality in sentencing.)
The only explanation I have...
Some criminals are more equal than others.

How did MacGregor end up in federal court anyway? I can see Wade being there; the Post Office is federal property. But what does a Wendy's have to do with the federal government?
Admittedly I'm not an American lawyer, nor even American. So I'm probably missing a subtlety there. I was under the impression that arson was generally a state crime.

Rioters' $500 Fine for Burning Down a Wendy's Sparks Outrage
Conservatives are outraged after two people charged with burning down a Wendy's restaurant in Atlanta in the summer of 2020 were fined just $500 each... Kingston and White accepted plea deals on Thursday, just days before they were set to go on trial, WSB-TV reported. Both pleaded guilty to charges including arson in the first degree... They will each have to pay a $500 fine, complete 150 hours of community service and serve five years of probation, according to the local station.
Wade remains in federal custody.

Chatham County man sentenced to federal prison for lighting dumpster fire that temporarily closed a restaurant
A Chatham County man was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to setting a fire in a restaurantโs outdoor trash container... Joshua Daryl McGregor, 34, of Savannah, was sentenced to 60 months in prison after pleading guilty to Arson, said Jill E. Steinberg, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia. U.S. District Court Judge Lisa Godbey Wood also ordered McGregor to pay restitution for property lost in the fire, and to serve three years of supervised release upon completion of his prison term.
There is no parole in the federal system.

https://thepostmillennial.com/blm-antifa-activists-convicted-of-arson-after-attempting-to-frame-proud-boys-for-their-own-crimes
A group of Black Lives Matter and Antifa rioters were convicted on federal charges after attempting to frame the Proud Boys for a series of vandalism and arson attacks the far-left extremists carried out on Atlanta police vehicles and United States Postal Service property during the lead up to the 2020 presidential election... John Wesley Wade, an Antifa rioter was sentenced to 5 years in federal prison yesterday on federal arson charges...
Wade was sentenced to five years in federal prison Monday on federal arson charges. He was subject to GPS ankle-monitoring at the time of the attacks when he was released on bond for burning down the Wendy's location in Atlanta, Georgia, where Rayshard Brooks was shot by the Atlanta Police Department.
GPS data from Wade's ankle monitor showed that his location was consistent with the time and place the incidents occurred, according to the court documents.
--------
Too long, didn't read...
Chisom Kingston, Natalia Hanna White and John Wesley Wade set a fire that destroyed the Wendy's in June 2020 amid protests sparked by the fatal shooting of Rayshard Brooks. Kingston and White accepted plea deals with both pleading guilty to charges including arson in the first degree. As far as I can tell John Wesley Wade was never sentenced for his part in burning down the Wendy's.
Meanwhile, Joshua Daryl McGregor, 34, of Savannah, was sentenced to 60 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to Arson. McGregor was also ordered to pay restitution for property lost in the fire, and to serve three years of supervised release upon completion of his prison term.
According to court documents and testimony, McGregor was an employee of the McDonaldโs at 2701 Montgomery Ave. In April 2023 he was frustrated because the restaurant was busy and lit a piece of cardboard on fire and tossed it into the restaurantโs dumpster, which had flammable materials, and ensured the fire ignited before returning to the restaurant.
The fire became so intense that customers in the drive-through lane had to back out of the parking lot, and the restaurant was forced to briefly close while the Savannah Fire Department extinguished the blaze, according to court documents and testimony.
Back to John Wesley Wade, one of the guys who torched the Wendy's. Wade was also sentenced to five years in federal prison, but not for burning down the Wendy's. Wade was sentenced for his part in at least seven arson and vandalism incidents directed at law enforcement, a bank, and other government entities that occurred around the Atlanta metropolitan area between Sept. 30, 2020, and Oct. 2, 2020.
At around 12:50 am on Oct. 2, 2020, several fires were set at the West End Post Office located at 848 Oglethorpe Avenue. One fire was set within a bin of mail on the loading dock of the Post Office building itself, destroying much of the mail and damaging other property in the possession of the US Postal Service. The other fires damaged five USPS vehicles that were parked in the secure, enclosed parking area.

This is off topic, well, except for the double standards.
In this case, its more about some of that Anarcho-Tyranny.

More true to form, or instinct, would be if Kamala instead proposed the following tilt in "tax policy" in the USA:
"Greetings, fellow citizen, honorable resident aliens, and heroic trasngender-Americans. I'm here to announce a pro-Diversity-Inclusion-Equity tax policy. It's gonna be great, ya'll (interlude for cackling).
In the Ka-MAH-la administration, there's going to be NO taxes for bona-fide members of the long-persecuted Black Race in the United States. Any monies earned in any way by members of this noble race will be tax-free, with no upper-limit.
Okay, okay. Because some of you have asked: Yes, we will be setting up racial-evaluation boards. My racial experts are going to be granted the power to judge who is Black and who is not Black. Don't worry, they'll let me pass (light cackle).
Know this: If you have a lot of White-European 'Oppressor' blood, Sorry, but you are going to still pay taxes at the usual rate. But rest assured, your taxes go to a good cause! Mmmkay? (moderate cackle).
My team is also in talks for possible lower-tax-rate policies for others People of Color, and members of non-Christian ethnic-groups. Remember that many, MANY people have also been persecuted, subject to vilification, attacks, country-club membership exclusion, and other horrors. There are many hurtful tropes and memes. One deplorable website that my aide showed me today is out there doing this in the most shocking and troubling way: Its name is 'Peak Stupidity'. Yes, there are extremists out there who say they oppose my pro-Diversity-Inclusion-and-Equity racial-taxation plan. But we'll see who laughs last when the Ka-MAH-lah administration comes to town (long cackling; fade to black)."

PS: Good evening, Achmed!
Taxes on tips, and taxes in general...
Funny that Emperor Constantine would put this in his big book...
(13 Paul) (Romans 13) Submission to Governing Authorities
13 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is Godโs servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are Godโs servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

(Obviously, I donโt really believe this. Iโm just letting you know where I believe the โgovernmentsโ of the west obtain their claim to their right to conquest. We all know they never really believed in all that social contract or consent of the governed nonsense. Maybe they used to, I donโt know. But they certainly donโt act like they do now and they certainly haven't in my lifetime.)
Butโฆ
Thanks to the magic of MMT the criminals masquerading as โgovernmentโ donโt actually have to tax the taxcattle to raise revenue. (Not directly anyway.) They have a money printer that goes brrrrโฆ.
So what are these โtaxesโ anyway?

Isabella asks: โWhy do we pay taxes if the government can print unlimited money?โ [sic]
Santiago Capital replies: โTaxes are tribute & tribute always flows from the weak to the strong. The strong initially created the money in order to pay for work to be done. If they didnโt demand some of the money back in the form of tribute (taxes) people wouldnโt accept the money for work in the 1st place.โ
(Sounds a bit like a master/slave relationship to me.)
Are โtaxes" in their current form the โprice we pay for a civilized societyโ (as implied by Mr. Hail under the last post, if Iโm not mistaken) or are โtaxesโ a tribute we pay to a violent criminal gang for protection from the violence perpetrated upon us by that same violent criminal gang? (A truly involuntary extraction from those engaged in economic production and/or those blessed with wealth to those who control violent coercive power, producing no reciprocal benefit.)
Or is it somewhere in between these two ends of the spectrum?

Not surprised about the way the lyinโ press is covering it.
