Illustrious commentator Steve Sailer's noticing, analyzing, and clever writing has left us with some really good phrases and Social Science Laws. One of the most accurate and reproducible laws of his is Sailer's Law of Mass Shootings.* In simplified form it says:
If there are more wounded than killed, then the shooters is likely black. If there are more killed than wounded, then the shooter is likely not black.It's simple and easy to apply. No calculus is necessary.
The observations are nothing new. We've all read plenty of news stories about shootings. We've probably all realized that the kind of Black! people that shoot their gang rivals or homies who've dissed them aren't the guys that spend time at the range.
What Mr. Sailer is good at is putting together everyday observations like that above, possibly seeing other points (such as the difference in the mentality of White vs black mass shooters), and matching them with as large as possible data sets. The more you think about these things, the more you notice them yourself, thinking, "yeah, no shit". However, did I already know this to the point I could have stated the same thing? Probably not, on one of Mr. Sailer's best points.
I've not seen an example that illustrates Sailer's Law of Mass Shootings as well as this story out of Montgomery, Alabama: Another Black Mass Shooting: In Montgomery, Alabama, More Than 350 Spent Casings Found from Massive Gun Battle at Black Party (13 Wounded/O Dead). 350 rounds! "Shots fired." does not begin to describe a scene of Black! dysfunctionality like this. 13 people being hurt** out of 350 shots fired is like 9 out of 10 kids jumping off the swing set landing not just out of the sand but outside the whole schoolyard. You've got to make a real effort to shoot that badly. Or, yeah, hold the guns sideways and push on them when you fire.
Wait, there's more:
All of shooting victims had injuries that authorities described as not life-threatening.Amazing.
Three people were injured when they were struck by vehicles leaving the area and one woman was injured by broken glass, police say.So, that's only 9 people actually hit by bullets during this mass shooting of 350 rounds (or more). I hope it wasn't bigger caliber than 9mm. The bigger stuff is getting pretty dear. How can these young folks afford that ammo and still pay their bills and raise their families...?
In the aftermath, my reaction to this splendid example of Sailer's Law of Mass Shootings is quite the opposite of Hey, Man, nice shot!. Some of these ghetto thugs understand the letter of the law, but this crowd also got into the spirit of the law.
Note that I linked to this story on "Paul Kersey"'s Stuff Black People Don't Like blog. With good reason, Mr. Kersey doesn't add much humor usually, but we see this at the top:

PS: Shooting really small CC pistols accurately is not very easy. We'll practice up, but even at 10 yards - first time with this gun - we were lucky to hit the letter-sized paper targets! (Gotta learn the sights better.) However, the point here is, there are people all over - how could you not hit more people?
* Really, I like his "Law of Female Journalism" even better, but it's not so easy to prove out with math... hard to obtain a closed-form solution.
** I gotta assume nobody else was hit, or they'd been considered "injured", ghettos, lawyers, and billboards being what they are today ...

PS. What M mentioned is something I though about added this morning. Is it that some of these guys have something to prove but don't really care that much about killing any certain person. Just start banging away like a bad ass. It's as if everyone is providing cover fire for everyone else or something.
This doesn't make the situation any better when decent people are in the background somewhere, minding your own business. Yes, NRA classes!

PS: Mr. Smith, I was being sarcastic about the "paying their bills" and the rest of the bullet (no pun intended) points, of course.
Yeah, lots of people maintain that self-defense rounds must be big enough to knock a guy off his ass and down. There is much heated debate about whether it's only max. momentum out of the muzzle vs. other factors, the way the bullet spreads in the body, the amount of energy transferred, and so on.
I do remember the story of this thick-skulled thug, though I didn't know his ghetto lottery payoff got up to $3.5 million.

I'm wondering if the shooters were actually aiming at other people. Shooting up the place also has the effect of leaving holes in the surroundings, thereby leaving your mark.
It would then be a form of intimidation, rather like a gangster saying "Nice place. Shame if something bad were to happen to it."
Adam: if only nine people were hit, I doubt any of them hit the head. I suppose it's possible by chance.

M, Yes, I agree. I too doubt anyone was hit in the head (that's the kind of detail the news might mention), but, with more than 362 shell casings found, anything is possible.
I really don't think the "under penetration of negro skulls by common carry cartridges" (9mm being the most popular) phenomenon is really affecting Sailer's law, but there may be examples of less death & more injury because someone walked away with a superficial head wound instead of dying because a bullet lodged in their brain.
I also agree that an event like this could be an intimidation tactic and not just a "feeling disrespected leads to anger mixed with low impulse control leads to shooting and not really hitting anyone" situation. I'm just glad that if the criminals who lord over us ever ignite a race war I'm on the team that knows about the importance of proper shot placement.
Achmed, I'm usually pretty good at picking up on sarcasm, even in text form, but this time I dropped the ball. Oh well. It was pretty late.
As you say, there are many factors to consider when comparing different rounds, and some people hold misconceptions about certain cartridges. For example, Mrs. Smith and I were visiting a neighbor (let's call him Jimmy) down the road a while back and we were talking firearms, specifically, the 45 colt. Jimmy was bragging on the 45lc, which is a fine round. But, while he was bragging on it he mentioned the Dirty Harry movie and the 44 mag that Eastwood carried when he proudly (and mistakenly) exclaimed...
"The 44 is a very powerful round and this is a 45!"
(Paraphrased, obviously.) Implying that the 45 has more stopping power than a 44 mag.
As if simply being one higher made for a more powerful cartridge. I didn't correct him, and just let it slide, but the 44 magnum is without a doubt the more powerful round (generally speaking) because of the velocity. (Much like the .357, the .44 really shines when fired from a rifle.)

Of course, this doesn't mean that you can't kill someone with a .380 acp pocket pistol, a .38 snub nose revolver, or even with a .22 lr fired from a handgun, even though many (dare I say most?) people would consider them to be a little anemic for a proper carry round.
