PS: We don't give out ages here, Mr. Hail (I mean, you CAN - the software won't stop you), but let me say that I was done with spectator (more so TV) sports and the TV hype at an early age. Therefore, I don't have much memory of how black athletes were revered by fans and/or the color, excuse me, Afro-American commenters during games, halftime shows, etc.

I suppose it's only from the commercials, and the parts in some movies (must have watched one or two that OJ was in) that I remember OJ as a well-spoken guy., Admittedly, if it were the commercials and movies, he'd had plenty of time to lose the ebonics for whatever lines he had. That probably helped with his image in front of White people. I don't recall seeing OJ on Johnny Carson, but your point about him bantering well with him is what I'm getting at too.,

The infotainment that went on for, what, a year or so was something to behold ... except I didn't. A friend told me to turn on the TV to see this silly slow-speed chase. OK, that was interesting for 5 minutes, but that was it. I did not follow any of the trial, talk about the infotainment on TV shows, or read any articles about it. I was 30 years younger then, hell, we all were, but I knew infotainment when I saw it already.

Perhaps if American hadn't bought into all the hype, the Lyin' Press would not have been so ready to launch more infotainment fests, the largest, of course, being the Kung Flu Panic. I'll say that at this point the Climate Calamity™ is being built up into the newest and, if not more Totalitarian, even more economically deadly.

It starts with people buying in and letting the media know that they will spend their time and money on this stupidity. All I got out of the whole thing was that, yes, a large majority of black people go tribal over citizenist any day of the week.

Tell me if this aligns with what you remember:

I have heard that as of the time of the 1994 double-murder, OJ Simpson was widely considered a "golden boy" from the world of Black athletes, popular and honored for his image of clean living. He was never involved in radicalism or thuggish lifestyles, never associated with any of it. He bantered well with Johnny Carson on the "Tonight Show," was a decent actor and even got offered the role of Terminator (taken by Arnold Schwarzenegger).

Surely there was considerable lingering suspicion, in the 1980s and 1990s, of the mega-project to glorify Black athletes, then ongoing, when which begun, when, in the 1950s? (see the ongoing interest of Steve Sailer, b.1958, in such things). But O.J. was kind of like a model citizen, a poster-child to overcome the lingering suspicions about the wisdom of glorification of Black athletes. (which is now so deeply embedded in a weird form of U.S. civic-nationalism, and also to a great extent with European soccer).

It was, so I hear, specifically specifically this image of O.K. that made the arrest (and the "care chase" footage with helicopters following along) so shocking to many Whites, and the kernel of such great interest, above what most other Black athletes who go on trial would get. Also sensational was that he had had as a wife, and killed, a White woman (and an earlier-generation version of "O.J." would simply never have had the ability to obtain a White wife, or at least far lower chance).

When Blacks ultimately came to favor his acquittal, it became a "Race thing." But Whites had actually been pro-O.J. in the 1970s (his playing career), 1980s, and early 1990s.

PS The statues honoring OJ as a white killer will be going up soon enough. Just give the dirt time to settle over his grave.

PS: OS, compared to George Floyd, who has statues in his honor, OJ IS a role model. (He kept himself in better shape at least, till the jab.)

My 2 cents worth... OJ Simpson. What a role model for young blacks in the 'hood to emulate. Beat your white wife, kill her and another white nearby and put on a show for the world to see as you run from cops on the evening news. Then, go to your grave with a string of felonies to your name. I guess that would make any black male proud. OJ's life of crime endears him to his community.
