Time the Avenger

This is the 3rd song* on The Pretenders' album Learning to Crawl. The theme of the album is obvious from the lyrics here. This one can't be strictly biographic, as it doesn't sound like it's about any musician such as her Ray Davies at all. The songs on this album, at least half of them, are about a family splitting up, with the woman (singer) being bitter about it.

Nobody's perfect, not even a perfect stranger.
Oh, but what a gal. She was such a perfect stranger.
And you're the best in your field, in your office,
with your girls and desk and leather chair.

So the guy was fooling around on her, but the women's biggest weapon is described. Let me skip a couple of lines:

Nobody is permanent. Everything is on loan here.
Even your wife and kids could be gone next year.
And with what you have left, you'll be forever, under pressure to support her.

Yep. However, the mistake the woman makes here is thinking Time, the Avenger is after the man more than the woman. Time is harder on women - it's just the way life works. Yet she sings:

Thought that time was on your side,
Now it's time the avenger.

then, later:

Time, time hear the bells chime
over the harbor in the city.
Time, one more vodka and lime,
To help paralyze that little
Tick, tick tick tick ...

Sorry, Chrissie, but you've probably learned by now that you had it backwards, and the man should be singing this.

It doesn't matter. Music is not so much about the lyrics. I really like this fast beat, the bass line, those chords (are they 6th chords?), and especially the long ending that sounds like it's a fade ending but stops abruptly. I could use 5 more minutes of that jamming.

Thank you for reading, maybe listening, and writing in this week, Peakers! I'll get to that genetics post - it's not developing very well anyway - a couple of more Climate Calamity™ posts, some odds and ends, and who really knows?

* The first 2 are Middle of the Road and Back on the Chain Gang. Peak Stupidity may not embed them all, but we'll probably feature most of the songs.

PS: Agreed with all, Mr. Smith. Yeah, as I wrote before, Gov. Haley WAS pretty Conservative in the standard sense. However, were some Moms who's (probably gangbanger) kids been shot to death, I could see her letting her emotion control her. You're probably right that she'd have signed it though. I believe she didn't have a chance as that State House kept coming close but not passing a CCW/OC bill.

Anyway, that's some good news. I don't know if the number could reach 40, but it'd be an interesting discussion as to what would be the upper limit, based on, well, Massachusetts, New York, California, etc.... OK, barring the SCROTUS actually enforcing the law of the land on them.

PS: Good afternoon, everyone... And good afternoon, Mr. Moderator!

I hope you found your travels most enjoyable.

About that H. 3594...

“Will this result in even more 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤! "teens" getting shot due to preening and dissing each other?”

Yeah, probably. Enwords gonna en...

“Whaddya' gonna do about that?”

Nothing. I just hope they continue to stay out of my sundown town. Unlike Steve Sailer, I will cry no tears for them nor will I pen any words lamenting their loss. I see these deaths of exuberance as a kind of eugenics program; a bit like a self cleaning oven. I just hope they don't harm (m)any innocents with their monkeyshines.

“I think Nikki Haley might have screwed the people of SC had she been Gov still.”

Well, I don't know much about Nimrata, (you probably know much more about her than I do, Mr. Moderator), and I generally don't like her, but she does seem ok on gun control issues. Some of the hard core anti-gun people have expressed their rage at her alleged pro-gun policies, so maybe(?) she would have signed H. 3594? I don't know...

“What I can't remember was if there was a veto by the other Governor - seems like one time was fairly recently - I don't think McMaster had a chance to sign it.”

I didn't find any info (I didn't look for more than a few minutes) about a veto from the South Carolina governor pertaining to any constitutional carry legislation. I did find some info about the governor of North Carolina vetoing a bill loosening the restrictions on handguns from about a year ago.

https://abc11.com/politics-gun-laws-safety-pistol-permit-bill/13040658/

Fortunately, his veto was over ruled.

Might there be enough political support for North Carolina to acknowledge their subjects right to Vermont Style carry? Could North Carolina become the 30ᵗʰ state?

Who knows?

PS: Regarding the SC Constitutional Carry law just passed and signed. First of all, kudos to Gov. McMaster. I think Nikki Haley might have screwed the people of SC had she been Gov still. The SC Gov has tried to pass it a few times lately, but it's been close without passing. (What I can't
t remember was if there was a veto by the other Governor - seems like one time was fairly recently - I don't think McMaster had a chance to sign it.)

From SC Public Radio - biased of course - which I'll show you - but I was trying to get through the confusion about this being an "open carry" only law. "Open" and not "concealed" makes not much sense enforecement-wise, but article titles and text kept leaving out "concealed".

I got it straight though, from SLED (SC Law Enforcement Division):

From the public radio article:

https://www.southcarolinapublicradio.org/sc-news/2024-03-07/sc-open-carry-state

************************
The amended legislation, negotiated by six legislators from the state House and Senate this week, passed the lower chamber Tuesday mainly along party lines by an 86-33 vote.

“This is something I’m deeply troubled we’re doing,” state Rep. Seth Rose, D-Richland, said Tuesday on the floor. “I have friends and citizens from both political parties ... come up to me and say, ‘What are y’all doing? What are you thinking?’”

The negotiated proposal passed the Senate 28-18, again, mostly along party lines.

One Democrat, state Sen. Mike Fanning of Fairfield, voted to pass the legislation.

Republican Sens. Chip Campsen of Charleston, Tom Davis of Beaufort and Luke Rankin of Horry opposed the bill.

“I submit to you that the only reason why this was done and this was passed in this chamber on a partisan vote mostly is because this is an election year,” state Sen. Margie Bright Matthews, D-Colleton, told television news station WCNC.
********************************

You submit that to me, Margie, but I veto that submission. Shoot, if 86-33 and 28-18 doesn't tell you it's popular with the people, I don't know what to say. It's a partisan vote because all the R's are pretty Conservative White people and a large majority of the D's are black. They don't care 'bout no Constitution.

Will this result in even more. black "teens" getting shot due to preening and dissing each other? Whaddya' gonna do about that? Separate countries - at least neighborhoods....

PS: Sorry for the late replies, guys. I was traveling until really late last night.

Dieter, women live longer, true. They're still trying to get married at 65 (I know one), if they aren't still. Woulda', shoulda', coulda' ... well we all have regrets.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic, Alarmist. At the age when I saw her on videos, yeah, they were ALL sexy (in that Joan Jett fashion for Chrissie, as you remarked before. A song like this though doesn't make her come across as sexy - that's for sure. It's not exactly "Happy Birthday, Mr. President", I mean ... ;-}

PS: Very true, Mr. Alarmist. Very true.

It is kinda nice that 29 states now acknowledge (and will hopefully respect) this (dare I say God given?) right that we all have. It is a step in the right direction.

https://i.ibb.co/YWbn7Kr/Right-to-Carry.gif

The above gif starts in 1986 when there was just one so called "constitutional carry" state. Interestingly enough it was Vermont. (Vermont has enjoyed constitutional carry since 1793.)

(I plucked this image from wikipedia and I have not fact checked it. At a glance, it does look fairly legit.)

Are there any more states that will start acknowledging so called constitutional carry? It seems like there are not many left where this change would be politically feasible.(?) I hope I'm wrong.

Will there be a 30ᵗʰ state?
If so, who will it be?

PS

Well, Mr. Smith, they technically all have Constitutional Carry, but some just refuse to acknowledge it.

PS
Crissie was at something - - - and failed midways - - - but it is always better to try and deal with harder stuff and - partly - fail than to - just play along.
Time is a tricky number too in that it not always works against women Mod. - they live longer than men. And that is something that - - counts - - too.
