Calvin Coolidge inaugurated as US President 100 years ago this minute.

Peak Stupidity has been glomming posts here and there off of John Derbyshire's writings on VDare. He's a great writer and tells a good story when he's got a story.

This one I want to use here is from his post last week noting It’s 100 Years Since Calvin Coolidge, Who Signed The 1924 Immigration CutOff Into Law, Was Sworn In As President!. About half of John Derbshire's VDare posts, "Diaries", transcript pieces from his podcasts, etc. make it to The Unz Review here, where one can make comments. This post on Silent Cal Coolidge does appear, right here.

Now, VDare's primary and almost sole focus is the immigration invasion. That's why Mr. Derbyshire appears there, and it fits that his take on President Coolidge is that Silent Cal's signing of the 1924 Immigration Act was his best act in his term as President.

We may have mentioned it since, but Peak Stupidity's being big fans of this President was something we noted in our quick discussion (not a review) - Amity Shlaes on President "Silent Cal" Coolidge. I did read her book on the Great Depression 1.0, years ago, The Forgotten Man: A New History of the Great Depression, so I mentioned that she also had written a book called Coolidge.

I don't know why I haven't read Miss Shlaes' book on him, but I already know President Coolidge was one of the handful or two of Presidents who didn't make himself a liar when he swore to the oath on inauguration day. Any President who is criticized for "doing nothing" and just, like "administering the government" or something is a real Libertarian/Constitutionalist - a guy I can admire.

President Harding, another in one of those handfuls of the good guys, IMO,
had gotten sick while in Alaska and ended up dying some weeks later while the VP Coolidge was up in Plymouth Notch, Vermont at his family's place. Mr. Derbyshire tells the neat story of this simple small-government America change of power, as little as there was, and downhome inauguration in the wee hours of the morning after a phone call from Washington, DC.

Rather than take the story from John Derbyshire and retell it, I will do something better than him, which is to post this at 02:47 EST*, an even century after the quick inauguration was held by 4 people at Mr. Coolidge's family home in Vermont.

PS: OK, I cheated. I did get the time zone thing, but then, short story even shorter, I couldn't do this at 03:47 EDT, so I'll doctor up the database.

* That's 03:47 EDT, but they didn't have this mess back then. That's 3 hours earlier in the summer from the Peak Stupidity standard of Mountain Standard Time, so it's (well, I'm gonna make it!) 00:47 MST.

You could always go to the Newfoundland TZ or, more appropo, the Bombay TZ, though Nepal is more fun than that.

PS: I fixed the links, Mr. Hail. I normally check all links, but I was in a hurry and it was a weird time in the Mountain Standard Zone.

Speaking of that, there in Scottsdale, Arizona, is where the servers sit. I could change the TZ, I'm sure, in the dBase, but my residential TZ will remain a mystery (for those who can't figure it out), so I just kept that one.

Yes, Adam and Mr. Hail, it's the same number on the clock as PDT during that period, when everyone else is on Daylight Time, as is the case as we discuss this. The clock in the bunker in, I mean, UNDER, Denver stays on Zulu time, at least until the batteries run out. The internet signal is weak though, so it's just for storage of beans,bullets, and band-aids...

PS: Mr. Ganderson, I think that's kind of sad, the kids that were the winners of the trip to the Coolidge anniversary. I mean those kids earned their way I guess, and I suppose they are the type of foreign immigrant kids who WILL earn their Citizenship in the Nation merit badges.- see:

However, it's a shame not many traditional American faces, those who may be descendants of Calvin' people, were not there.

Mr. Smith, I believe the Peak Stupidity Timestamp Puzzle may be (re)solved in the following manner:

Conceptualize the map of the USA, "from the Great Atlantic Ocean, to the white Pacific Shore; from the queen of flowing mountains, to the Southlands by the shore." The four time-zones lay before us on our grand map. When the Daylight Savings Time mandate comes in, all the normal time zones jump one to the east ("spring forward").

Therefore:

PDT = MST

MDT = CST

CDT = EST

EDT = something in the Atlantic Ocean

MST used used here in the summer is the same as current Pacific time (PDT); that is, until Pacific time whimpers back into boring-old Daylight Non-Saving Time (PST) in a few months.

Peak Stupidity's executive committee apparently rejected the time-zone shifts and keeps permanently on PST (which is now current Pacific time, or PDT; and not actually the actual current official time over in the rumored Peak Stupidity Survival Bunkers outside Denver).

PS: Greetings, Mr. Hail,

I don't know about any committee meeting, or which timezone might be the least stupid, but I did notice that the PeakStupidity clock is labeled MST while the timestamp is PST?

https://www.google.com/search?q=Pacific+Standard+Time

I think it's a daylight savings thing?
(Does the PeakStupidity MST clock do daylight savings?)

"the Peak Stupidity standard of Mountain Standard Time"

Was this designated, by committee vote, to be the least-Stupid of the USA's lower-forty-eight continental time zones?

PS.

Re the Coolidge-polooza-I also noticed there were 100 high school aged winners of a Coolidge essay contest. I was hoping the prompt would have been something like “ What would Silent Cal have thought about the current crop of dickweeds running for prexy today?”, but I never did find out. Most of the kids were South and East Asians.

PS: How about that, Mr. Ganderson! Sounds like a nice short road trip for you. So, the Governor of Vermont lied. He's no Ron DeSantis.

I took a ride up to Plymouth Notch yesterday. It was a beautiful day, and a nice drive.

Interestingly I arrived in time to see the end of a naturalization ceremony- and I thought “ Didn’t Cal sign a bill severely limiting immigration? In addition the former governor of Vermont talked about how much Coolidge loved him some diversity. Oh well, it was a fun day.

PS: "Don’t forget that they’ve added a few leap-seconds in the past century, plus the Earth’s rotation recently sped up." Ahh, crap - may have to go back to the database...

About Mark Steyn, is the "100 years ago today" a regular thing with him? Or, do you mean he is or would be a fan of Calvin Coolidge? I used to go to his site occasionally, but it was kind of mixed up, reviews of musicals, whatever mixed in.

Don’t forget that they’ve added a few leap-seconds in the past century, plus the Earth’s rotation recently sped up.

I hope Mark Steyn is well enough to do a “100 years ago today” segment this week.

PS With the possible exception of Dwight Eisenhower, Coolidge was the last US president who wasn’t a fool or a knave.
